The debate over collective and individual leadership has been settled in the BJP and the cadre has accepted collective leadership, especially since chief minister Sadananda Gowda and state party chief KS Eshwarappa have forged a new force.

The party appears to have recovered from the dissent in the wake of the Bellary by-polls. “It was a shock, but the party knew it was a temporary phase that could be rectified with a decisive blow to rebels. The party had suspended four MLAs who supported B Sriramulu, but the party was able to make the MLAs kneel before the party. The realisation that they cannot survive in public life without the BJP was the effect of party discipline,” said V Dhananajay Kumar, the state’s representative in New Delhi.

Sources said the party high command will keep a close watch on discipline and internal democracy to keep the cadre morale from flagging when leaders engage in public debate over party affairs. The rift between Yeddyurappa and Eshwarappa has done considerable damage and triggered airing of complaints in public.

District presidents, secretaries, city- and town-level office bearers are now confronted by challengers and this was unheard of in the party before.

However, party leaders are keeping their fingers crossed about Yeddyurappa’s next move as he has given January 15 as the date for a new ‘beginning’. But the party is certain he will take up a radical programme. “I am sure he will start touring the state and start working to rebuild the BJP,” added Kumar.
