Celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of the legendary Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin, Bangalore School of Music in association with the Polish embassy is organising an evening of Chopindia Music & Dance by piano maestro Jerzy Sterczynski accompanied by Madhu Nataraj and her Natyam Stem Dance Kampni.

The event at Alliance Francaise tomorrow intends to present an amalgamation of cultures, Indian and Polish.

Bangalore School of Music (BSM) has been instrumental in creating a vibrant music culture in the city since its inception in 1987. “For this event, we have collaborated with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and Alliance Française de Bangalore,” says Aruna Sunderlal, founder and managing trustee, BSM.

The school, she says, “aims to create a symposium of eastern and western music and dance.” Such events were pioneered by the collaboration between Sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar and the Beatles. “The people of Bangalore have proved to be quite encouraging,” claims Sunderlal.

The year 2010 has been hailed as the year of Chopin, a renowned composer of French-Polish parentage whose music offered refuge to Poland, a nation, which faced severe oppression prior to its reconstruction.

This event dedicated to him is one of the many performances to be held around the country to commemorate his contribution to music.

“The evening will start with a piano recital by Polish pianist, Jerzy Sterczynski, followed by a dance performance by Stem Dance Kampani led by acclaimed danseuse Madhu Natraj on Chopin’s music,” explains Sunderlal.

Sterczynski, a maestro in Chopin’s music will play the best of Chopin’s compositions followed by a small Barcarolle presentation, a folk song sung by Venetiangondoliers (Venetian boatmen). And Madhu Natraj’s dance troupe will make an attempt to interpret Chopin’s music through dance movements.

The dance will be a blend of Kathak, Kallaripayattu and contemporary dance on Chopin’s music  beats. “The dance will showcase a gradual transition from one form of art to the other representing a theme,” says Sunderlal.

The event will be held today at 7.30 pm at the Alliance
Francaise.
