R Shardamma’s last meeting as BBMP mayor brought cheers to city corporators as their honorarium was increased considerably.

On Thursday, the BBMP council revised the honorarium for mayor to Rs40,000 per month, deputy mayor to `30,000 and corporators to Rs25,000. Corporators’ charges per sitting were raised to Rs1,500, vehicle allowance to Rs5,000 and telephone expenses to Rs6,000 per year.

With this, honorariums for mayor, deputy mayor and corporators have been revised for the second time in two years. In 2010, the council headed by the then mayor SK Nataraj raised honorarium after 13 years.

In 1997, the mayor was getting a monthly honorarium of ` 5,000 which was increased to Rs20,000 in 2010. Deputy mayor was getting Rs3,500 which was raised to Rs15,000 and corporators’ honorarium was raised to Rs7,500 from Rs1,500. Sitting charges were also revised to Rs1,000 from Rs200 and vehicle allowance was raised to Rs5,000 from Rs500.

The council also approved a Rs20,000 pension for former corporators. Peenya Industrial Area corporator KL Thimmananjaiah said the families of former BBMP corporators Pusalingam and Cholam were in deep financial crisis.
“Not all corporators are financially sound. The mayor has to increase the pension of ex-corporators,” the corporator said.

Meanwhile, reacting to a query by Hanumanthanagar ward corporator K Chandrashekar on adulterated milk, special commissioner KR Niranjan said a meeting will be held with joint commissioner (health), chief health officers and food inspectors to discuss the issue. He also said that food inspector Athaulla Khan had been transferred in connection with the seizure of 10,640 litres of adulterated milk recently.

Yediyur ward corporator NR Ramesh said BBMP officials failed to identify government properties in areas added to BBMP. He said seven  CMCs, one TMC and 110 villages were included in the newly formed BBMP. Parks, playgrounds and swimming pool are needed in 66 newly added wards.

However, the BBMP deputy commissioner (estate) does not have details of BBMP properties in Yelahanka, Dasarahalli, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Bommanahalli and Mahadevapura zones.
“The officials have failed to collect the details on the government properties in these zones,” Ramesh alleged.
