There is a huge demand for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) internet connections in the city, but the agency has been unable to mobilise enough number of modems to meet the requirement.

As a result, the customers are being forced to pay through their nose to obtain modems from private agencies. A Type II BSNL modem, which costs Rs2,200, is dearer by Rs300 to Rs500 if purchased from private agencies.

BSNL Bangalore Circle officials complain that there is no supply of modems from their corporate headquarters. “No modems have been supplied for four-five months. We have been forced to ask private agencies to instal modems,” said a BSNL official catering to Vijayanagar areas.

“We have to get modems from the Delhi corporate office. But neither are the supplies coming nor are they explaining reasons for it. So we are asking individuals/ agencies dealing in modems to supply them to our customers,” he explained.

The officials further said that no purpose would be served in asking customers to wait for their connections till the modems arrive from the headquarters.

Officials said they are expecting modems by next month. The local BSNL offices have displayed contact numbers of private agencies dealing in modems and customers who apply for internet connections have been asked to call these numbers.

Ananth Bhat of Daksha Compu Services, which is supplying modems to BSNL customers in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, said there was a huge demand. “I get calls from at least 4-5 people in a week asking for modems. I worked for BSNL in 2005 on contract basis and my sphere of work was installing modems. BSNL officials have now asked me to supply these to customers,” he said.

BSNL internet connections are still the most sought after given the agency’s network and cost involved. “There are a lot of companies offering internet connections, but people still opt for BSNL because of the cost factor and the good network,” Ananth said.
