An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) attached to the Chickpet traffic police station was suspended for accepting Rs200 bribe from a traffic offender. On Monday, DT Venkatamaluvaiah was on duty to tow vehicles parked in no-parking zones. While two-wheeler owners committing the offence are supposed to be fined Rs300, he was collecting Rs100-Rs200 to let off the offenders.
Around 2pm, a scooter belonging to Lalithamma was towed. The woman, who was away shopping, went to BVK Iyengar Road, to retrieve her vehicle.
On reaching the spot, she found that Nataraj was releasing vehicles after offenders spoke to Venkatamaluvaiah. She saw 14 two-wheelers being released from traffic police custody.
Lalithamma too spoke to the ASI and requested to release her scooter for Rs200 as penalty.
After paying the amount, Nataraj did not issue a receipt to Lalithamma.
After taking the scooter, the woman informed other traffic police officers, who ordered an inquiry.
“Nataraj told officials that he released her vehicle only after instruction from the ASI to collect `200. ASI Venkatamaluvaiah has been suspended with immediate affect,” said DCP traffic (West) V Ramaiah.
