Anger, a vital human emotion, is getting importance in the present day more than ever. Anger is the root cause of all disputes. As people recognise the importance of anger management at home and workplace, the UN has decided to observe December 1 to December 7 as a week for Anger Awareness.

Psychiatrists highlight the need of anger management and various ways of tackling anger. It is important that schools and colleges educate students and teachers about common mental health and psychological problems such as stress, anxiety and depression, and how these can manifest in the form of problematic anger or anger management problem, said
experts.

“Conducting seminars on physical and mental health issues will be a move in the right direction, and even promote well-being and desired academic and sporting performance. A structured health education and awareness should become a part of the curriculum from secondary school,” said Dr Roshan Jain, consultant psychiatrist and de-addiction specialist, Apollo Hospital.

However, it is more helpful to have a therapist at school to counsel children rather than devising a course on anger management, said Dr Shyam Bhat, consultant psychiatrist, Manipal Hospital and Mind Body Clinic. “Anger cannot be managed in isolation. To delve at a permanent solution, you need to reach the root cause of anger. And in case of children, it can be improper nutrition, dyslexia, tension with parents, family problem or separated parents. In each case, the reason is different and a therapist can help the child cope with anger,” he said.

In the corporate world too, employees should be given room to vent their anger within the office premises. “Offices with a room to scream can help. However, an in-house psychiatrist or therapist to interact with employees would be ideal to develop a happier work force,” said Dr Jain.

Companies should try and create an atmosphere where seeking help from a psychiatrist is not a taboo and confidentiality of employees is maintained, added Dr Bhat. “When angry, employees can hit the office gym as exercising is the best way to vent anger. Organisations must focus on other relaxation techniques such as a jogging, swimming, etc,” he said.
