Three rare spine surgeries, known as Kyphoscoliosis in medical terminology, were performed successfully at the civil hospital in Asrava, which would give the afflicted a chance to lead a normal life.

Kyphoscoliosis is a rare genetic disorder in which the patient develops a combination of kyphosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, and scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine.

"This is a disorder in which the patient's back takes the shape of S or C and the person develops a physical deformity. This is generally a genetic problem and those who are detected with it find it difficult to lead a normal life. Recently, we performed three surgeries. We invited doctors from abroad to take part in the operations as well," said MM Prabhakar, superintendent, civil hospital.

Daksha, a 15-year-old, had not been born with any abnormalities but gradually developed lumps on her shoulders. She was taken to the civil hospital where she was operated upon by two surgeons. "Before the operation, she was bent at an angle of 86 degrees. After the operation, her back has been fixed at 40 degrees. The C shape of her spine has been normalised and is in vertical shape now," said JV Modi, orthopaedic surgeon at the civil hospital.

Another case of a successful operation was that of 18-year-old Jalpa from Junagadh. "Jalpa had developed Kyphoscoliosis and her angle before the operation was 120 degree. After surgery, it has been fixed at 35 degrees," said the doctor.

In the case of 15-year-old Heena, she had had a spinal anomaly since birth. "When she was six days old, she was operated upon in Rajkot by a neurosurgeon to fix the anomaly. But the spine stayed curved and she couldn't stand straight as she was bent from the back. After surgery, she can now stand straight," said the doctor.

During all the operations, the nervous systems of the patients were constantly monitored.
