Man held at Ahmedabad airport for smuggling gold

A man, allegedly trying to smuggle in 1.248 kg of gold worth Rs 33.74 lakh, was arrested at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel international airport here on Thursday by the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs.

Mohsin Hanif, who landed here from Sharjah in an Air Arabia flight, had converted the gold into thin wires and hidden it under straps of his trolley bag, an official said.

According to the official, Hanif was detained on suspicion and later confessed to carrying the gold illegally during interrogation.

Last month, the state agencies, including the city crime branch and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), had seized about 65 kgs of gold worth Rs 17.84 crore, and arrested seven persons in two separate cases from the airport.
