Fed up with the constant harassment faced by students at the hands of the school authorities over fees and the lack of action on the part of the state government, the All Gujarat Parents Association (AGPA) on Wednesday sought Gujarat State Child Protection Society’s intervention in the matter. They sent a letter to the child protection society requesting action in connection with the ongoing controversy over the Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Act.

“We are seeking protection of our children from your department. Some of the self-financed schools in Gujarat are giving leaving certificate and threatening children with physical torture too. Till date no action taken from any of the authorities. There have been also complaints to 1098 helpline too but even then DEO did not take any action,” read the letter.

Speaking about the controversy, members of the association said schools in the state had been pressurising students to pay fees, threatening parents with cancellation of admission if they did not toe the line.

AGPA is not the only one to raise the issue. Several parents associations, active in different parts of the city, are fighting for the rights of the students at large.

Naresh Shah, President of All Gujarat Parents Association, said: “If schools and the government behave in an autocratic manner, we will raise this issue with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the United Nations bringing to their notice that children are at risk in Gujarat from the school nexus and the Gujarat government is ignorant about such issues.

“This ignorance may lead to a dangerous situation here. The morale of children is getting affected due to rude behaviour of the schools.”

The association has named nine schools in the state. These include Delhi Public School in Bopal, Delhi Public School in Gandhinagar, Divine Child International School, RP Vasani international school, Tejas Vidyalaya in Baroda, LP Savani in Surat, Radiant International School in Surat, Delhi Public School in Surat and Essar International School in Surat
