VK Nayi, deputy superintendent of police of Viramgam division, has been arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for lodging a false case under Prohibition Act to extort money from the person framed in the case.

Nayi, who was on the run for three months, surrendered before ACB on Monday, said assistant director at ACB GV Padheriya. Nayi was remanded to ACB custody by the court for three days.

The case dates back to September 7, when ACB had caught Bhupendrasinh Jhala, a Lok Rakshak with the Mandal police station in Ahmedabad district while accepting a bribe of Rs 75,000. Jhala revealed that he had accepted the bribe on behalf of two constables posted in the Dy SP office. The two constables were also arrested later.

Investigations revealed the senior police official's involvement in booking the complainant in the bribery case in a false prohibition case.

"Some police persons who were shown as members of the raiding party, and police witnesses, denied having taken part in any such raid. Other evidence also showed that the case was false. CCTV footage showed Dy SP VK Nayi's present at the Mandal police station at the time the alleged raid took place. It became clear that he had he had conspired to misuse his position for personal financial gains," ACB said.

Nayi surrendered before ACB sleuths after his anticipatory bail pleas were rejected by the sessions court and high court.

In another case, Manish Gautam, posted as director of Outreach Bureau in Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Ahmedabad, was arrested on Tuesday for accepting a bribe. The Class I official had allegedly sought bribe of Rs 20,000 for selecting a candidate in audition test. Cash of Rs 2.50 lakh was also recovered from the official. ACB appealed to other people, who may have paid a bribe to Gautam, to contact them.

In yet another case, Devayat Bhola, working as panchayat talati in Jamnagar district, was caught taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 on Tuesday. Bhola had demanded the bribe for making an entry regarding non-agricultural land in revenue records, ACB added.
