The Fee Regulatory Committee (Technical) has issued show cause notices to 453 colleges across the state for not complying with its decision related to the deposit money collected from students.

Last month, nine engineering and pharmacy colleges across the state had returned nearly Rs 1.6 crore of deposit money after the FRC came down heavily on the colleges. This decision comes as a major relief to engineering students as colleges have returned a huge amount of money which was earlier charged from students.

Of the 453 colleges, some of the city's top colleges have been issued notices including CEPT University, Nirma University, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay University, Ahmedabad Institute of Technology, Apollo Institute of engineering.

The colleges have been given time till July 16 to file a declaration.

"After receiving a number of complaints from students seeking help for huge sums of money that colleges were charging in terms of deposit money, we had decided that fees include everything like caution money, extra-curricular activities fee, etc. Jainik Vakil, member, FRC (Technical) said.

"During that time, we had sought a declaration from 614 colleges in the state that they will not charge any money other than fees. Of these, only 200 had given us undertaking whereas some had to return the money collected from students. With the new academic year beginning from July, we wanted to be sure of what the colleges are charging. We have fixed their fees and they cannot charge beyond that."

Several institutes also returned Rs 1 crore deposit money early last month.

MONEY RETURNED

Two more colleges from Anand and Vadodara also returned around Rs 66 lakh recently. While GSFC university in Vadodara returned Rs 64,48,000 to 448 students, Anand Pharmacy college  returned Rs 2,18,400 to 91 students.
