A lifeline has been thrown to  those who failed in the SSC and HSC board exams of the Maharashtra State Board of Education. Those students will now be allowed to keep terms (ATKT) like their counterparts in university courses. This will apply for the admission process for the 2009-2010 academic year. This means 3.64 lakh students, who failed their board exams this year, will be able to move to a higher class.

School education minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil made the announcement on Friday in Aurangabad. He said the move has been initiated by the ministry to save the loss of one educational year for the failed students.

However, this will benefit only those students who have failed in a maximum of two subjects. There are six subjects (excluding environmental studies which is graded) in all for both board exams. They will be given two attempts to clear the failed subjects — in exams conducted in October and March.

Addressing a press conference here, Vikhe-Patil said 2.04 lakh SSC and 1.6 lakh HSC students failed in two subjects in the board examinations conducted in February/March 2009. “The initiative will have a huge social impact as it will benefit the girl child from rural areas. It was a proposal by the state board, which was accepted by the government today,” he said.

“We are also referring the case to the higher education ministry as they will have to help HSC students get admissions in degree colleges.” Vikhe-Patil added: “The junior colleges admissions for these students will start after the final list comes out, in August first week. The students will get admissions on the spot. They will be directed to those colleges where seats are vacant. All the deputy directors’ offices in the state have been given instructions to approve the proposals for new divisions. So there will be no paucity of seats.”

From next year, the ATKT students will be allowed to apply at the same time as those that have pass marks. He further added that these failed HSC students can also apply in Diploma in Education colleges. These 3.64 lakh students will have to clear their SSC/HSC in the board’s October examination.

Vice-chancellor of Mumbai University, Vijay Khole, welcomed the move saying, “More students will be given an opportunity to pursue higher education. It will also help many students who must have failed the exams due to illness, circumstances. As the degree college admissions are over, colleges will have to make special arrangements to accomodate these students. However, they will miss out on academic days.”
