The world had come to a stop after Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed while playing with his team against Finland during a European Championship on Saturday.

Eriksen fell to the ground near the sideline late in the first half and was immediately surrounded by medical personnel.

While he collapsed suddenly while running near the left touchline, Danish players were seen in tears as medical staff tried to revive the Inter Milan player. His teammates formed a shielding wall around him to give him privacy as the medics treated him.

"The UEFA EURO 2020 match in Copenhagen has been suspended due to a medical emergency," UEFA said in a short statement.

The raucous crowd at the Parken Stadium suddenly was seeing going silent after the 29-year-old fell to the ground. While football fans are praying for his quick recovery, let's get to know the Danish midfielder a bit more.

Born in Middelfart, Denmark, Christian Dannemann Eriksen followed in his father Thomas's footsteps and started playing football in the academy of the local side, Middelfart G&BK.

 

Eriksen's father, who was also one of the coaches at the time helped the youth side finish unbeaten in the local youth championship in 2004 for the third time in a period of four years.

 

Eriksen made his international debut for Denmark in March 2010. He was the youngest player of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. 

 

In the build-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Denmark had reached the Round of 16 but were defeated by Croatia after a penalty shoot-out.

 

Eriksen was named the Danish Football Player of the Year a record five times.

When it comes to club career, Eriksen started playing with Dutch side Ajax, where he won the Eredivisie in 2010–11, 2011–12, and 2012–13. He had established himself to comparisons with Michael Laudrup for his traditional number 10 role.

 

In 2014, Eriksen joined Tottenham and was named the club's Player of the Year in his debut season. During his seven years at Spurs, he was also named the club's Player of the Year in the 2016–17 season and was included in the 2017–18 PFA Team of the Year. 

 

In 2018–19, Eriksen became only the second player after David Beckham to record over 10 assists in four successive Premier League seasons. He was a key member of the side that reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final. 

 

In January 2020, he signed with the Italian side Inter Milan.

Described as the "classic number ten", Eriksen's favored position was in the centre of the pitch as an attacking midfielder.

 

The player has many skills at the back of his hand as he possesess excellent vision, passing range, crossing accuracy, movement, and an ability to read the game.

 

His creative playing style has led pundits to compare him to compatriots Michael and Brian Laudrup, as well as Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart.

 

Eriksen has also cited Francesco Totti as an inspiration.

Eriksen lives with his wife Sabrina Kvist Jensen and the couple have two children. Eriksen's younger sister Louise Eriksen also plays football and is the captain for KoldingQ in the Elitedivisionen.

 

After the player's collapse on the field, Denmark's captain Simon Kjær was seen ensuring Eriksen didn't swallow his tongue when he was unconscious.

 

Kjaer secured Eriksen's neck, cleared his airwaves, and administered CPR to the midfielder before medics arrived.

 

The skipper and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel were then seen consoling Eriksen's wife, while the Denmark players formed a barrier around the player.

 

The Danish Football Association have confirmed that Eriksen is now "awake" in hospital and awaiting further tests.

While players on the field called for medical attention immediately, in a display of sportsmanship, Finland fans — who were seated closer to the spot, offered their national flags to shield the opposing player and block him from view.

 

When Eriksen was carted off the field, a Finland flag accompanied him.

 

After the match was suspended, fans were seen chanting Eriksen's name at the stadium. Finland supporters would cheer "Christian!" and be met by the Danes responding "Eriksen!"
