Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic appeared on Friday before the Yugoslav war crimes court to hear charges of genocide over the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Extradited to the Netherlands from Serbia on Tuesday following his arrest last week, Mladic appeared in court wearing what looked like a military forage cap, before later removing it to take his seat.

"I am General Mladic," Mladic said in a calm voice.

He will be asked to enter a plea at Friday's hearing.
