Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari today said his party leaders and the government are being subjected to a vicious campaign to tarnish its image by the remnants of dictatorship and warned the ruling PPP workers against machinations of anti-democratic forces.

Warning the workers against the machinations of anti-democratic forces, Zardari urged them to stand united and help build a progressive and democratic country.

Zardari's warning was part of his message issued on the eve of the founding day of the PPP, of which he is the co-chairman.

He however did not identify the "anti-democratic forces".

Zardari said this year's founding day celebrations were being held at a time when the PPP, its leaders and the government are being subjected to a vicious campaign to tarnish its image by the remnants of dictatorship even though the party was elected by the people through a democratic vote.

"But let us make it clear that we will foil all conspiracies against the party and will continue to work for strengthening democratic institutions as envisioned by (slain former premier Benazir) Bhutto...," he said.

"Bhuttoism lives and will live on to empower the people and strengthen democracy and democratic institutions and to serve the masses," he said, referring to Benazir Bhutto and her late father, former President Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who founded the PPP.

The PPP-led government has removed the vestiges of dictatorship from the Constitution, opened the doors of political reforms in the tribal areas and lent new strength to democracy through political reconciliation, Zardari said.

He contended that PPP had taken on militants head on.

"The epic struggle for safeguarding democracy and democratic institutions and empowering people will continue no matter what our detractors say or do," he added.

In a separate message, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani asked PPP workers to spread among the people the party's core message that they were the real stakeholders in the system and they needed to be made master of their destiny.
