The tragic crash of a United Nations plane carrying 32 people in DR Congo has left only one survivor, officials said today.

The small plane had crashed yesterday while attempting to land at the Kinhasa airport amid torrential rain.

The plane was coming from the north-eastern city of Kisangani and was trying to land in heavy rain at the N'Djili airport in the capital.

There were 29 passengers on board and four crew members, according to the UN.

Most of the UN staff on board worked in the peacekeeping force (MONUSCO) stationed in the country.

The UN has not yet released the name of the people killed.
