A Bangladeshi court today jailed three former police chiefs for their suspected involvement in a 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally that killed 24 people and injured some 300 people, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The three former IGPs, Ashraful Huda, Khoda Baksh Chowdhury and Shahudul Haque, surrendered before the chief metropolitan magistrate court of Dhaka, a day after it ordered their arrest.
The court rejected their bail petitions as they served in crucial positions at the time of occurrence of the crime
and the culprits received their assistance during or after the attack, chief prosecutor Syed Rezaur told PTI.
The three former top cops, who served as IGPs during the tenure of the BNP-led four-party coalition government,
were escorted to the Dhaka Central Jail soon after Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Roy Chowdhury rejected their
bail plea, sources in the court said.
The development came a day after chief metropolitan magistrate AKM Enamul Haque issued arrest warrants for Tarique
Rahman, the fugitive eldest son of former premier Khaleda Zia and 17 others over the grenade attack that led to severe
injury to one of Hasina's ears.
Rahman, 46, who is now in London on a government parole for treatment since 2008, has been indicted for abetting the attack in which Hasina, the then opposition leader, was visibly the main target.
On Sunday, the CID formally charged Rahman, the senior vice-president of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party
(BNP), and 29 others of the attack after an "extended investigation" into the case.
Rahman is also an accused in several other criminal and graft cases pending for trial.
