Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj today said BJP was disturbed by the arrest of former Sri Lanka army chief General Sarath Fonseka and requestedpresident Mahinda Rajapaksa to release him immediately.
"We are disturbed by the news reports about the arrest and detention of General Sarath Fonseka, the opposition candidate
in the recent presidential elections in Sri Lanka," Swaraj
said in a statement.
She asserted that as the largest democracy India could not prove of this, especially when it was taking place in its neighbourhood.
"We call upon president Mahinda Rajapaksa to ensure the safety and well-being of the opposition leader and request his release immediately," Swaraj said.
Since the death of LTTE Chief V Prabhakaran last year, BJP has raised the issue of welfare of Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka and asked the Indian government repeatedly to take up the matter with the Rajapaksa government.
