Terming the murder of a 24-year-old Indian student in Sydney as "very unfortunate", India today sought a report from its envoy there and said it will see to it that justice is done even as Australia ruled out that the crime was racially motivated.

"A very very unfortunate incident.... We are getting a report from our Ambassador and meanwhile, we learn that a person has been taken into custody by the Australian authorities," external affairs minister SM Krishna said.

He said, "We are closely following it up, monitoring it and we will see that justice is done."

The student, Tosha Thakkar, was raped and murdered and her body was found stuffed inside a suitcase near a canal in Sydney last week.

The Australian high commission (AHC) extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tosha Thakkar, an AHC release said.

High commissioner Peter Varghese has sent a personal message of condolence to Mr Thakkar and has also spoken to the family, it said.

"This brutal killing will shock Australians. The police are determined that the perpetrator will be brought to justice. There is no indication that this awful crime was racially motivated," the release said.

"Our thoughts are with Tosha's family and friends in India and Australia," it said.

Thakkar was studying accounting at the Sydney College of Business and IT, which collaborates with Southern Cross University, and was a permanent resident of Australia.

The high commission noted the Australian police action in the incident. "The Australian police have acted quickly ?" they arrested a suspect on Friday, the same day as the discovery of the victim's body. The New South Wales Police have charged a 19 year-old with murder and aggravated sexual assault.

"In a court hearing in Sydney today, the suspect was denied bail," it said.
