The British police on Thursday said they were keeping an "open mind" on the possibility that the twin murders of Indian-origin Avtar Singh Kolar and his English wife in Birmingham were prompted by revenge by someone affected by the work of their police officer son.

The bodies of Avtar, 62, and Carole, 58, were found in their house by their son, who is a police officer with the West Midlands Police, on Wednesday, when calls to their house went unanswered.

The couple were due to look after their grandchildren, but when they could not be contacted the son went to their semi-detached home and discovered their bodies.

The son has been named in the local media as Jason Kolar, and described by Superintendent Sean Russell as a "very, very good officer".

The incident comes closely after 23-year-old Indian student Anuj Bidve was shot dead in Greater Manchester, in a case that make headlines in both India and Britain.

The police had also confirmed the death of another 20-year-old Indian-origin student Gurdeep Hayer being found dead in Manchester city centre, more than a week after he went missing.

Russell on Thursday said he was aware of speculation that the murder may have been prompted by revenge for the couple's son's work in the police force, but so far there was no evidence to this effect.

He said: "I am aware of speculation regarding motive but I would like to reiterate that we are keeping an open mind regarding the incident. There is nothing at this stage to indicate that the fact that the couple's son is a serving police officer had anything to do with their deaths".

Russell added: "My understanding is on speaking to the investigative team yesterday, that he's [the son] coping extremely well.

He's a very, very good officer but actually this is an absolutely horrendous incident and anybody in that position would have been deeply affected".

The couple had been married for 40 years and have four grown-up children and eight grandchildren.

Detective Superintendent Richard Baker, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "We will today begin detailed forensic analysis of the scene on Friary Road, and detectives will be speaking to people in the vicinity to determine as much information as possible about the circumstances of Mr and Mrs Kolar's death".
