Eight family members of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have left Algeria for the Egyptian capital Cairo, a media report said Monday.

Algeria's Arabic daily El Khabar, quoting a source, said the eight family members left Algeria for Cairo on Saturday via the Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers.

The source, however, did not provide any names. He only said Gaddafi's daughter Aisha, who recently gave birth in Algeria, might be among them, the report said.

Algeria permitted members of Gaddafi's family to enter the country late August. Aisha gave birth to a baby girl in an Algerian border town.

Aisha was criticised by Algerian authorities a few days ago when she issued a message terming Libya's rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) as "traitors".

The statement, aired on Syria-based Al-Rai satellite channel, drew sharp criticism from Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Mdeleci, who called Aisha's comment "unacceptable" and pledged to take measures to prevent its recurrence.

After the ouster of Gaddafi following months of a NATO-led operation, the NTC has been recognised as the legitimate power in Libya by some 60 countries.
