Egypt has detained an Israeli man on suspicion of spying and for trying to recruit young Egyptians during demonstrations in central Cairo to act against the state, judicial sources said on Sunday.

The man was an officer in Israeli intelligence, said a judiciary source in the office for the prosecution, adding the Israeli had been active in Cairo's Tahrir Square. The man was not identified by name.

"He was there on a daily basis inciting youths towards sectarian strife. He was distributing money to some of them," the source said, adding he had been encouraging some youths to clash with the army. He said youths reported the man's actions.

The sources said the man was still being investigated. It was not immediately clear when the man was detained.
