Oregon shooting: Chris Mintz who tried to save others was shot thrice by gunman

An ex-US armyman who made it through a combat deployment, was shot several times, as he rushed towards the gunman that opened fire at the Umpqua Community College, Oregon on Thursday.

Chris Mintz, 30, tried to save the lives of others from the gunman who killed nine people. The gunman, described as shy and socially awkward by neighbours, also wounded seven people in the rampage and died in an exchange of gunfire with police. 

Mintz's aunt Wanda Mintz told Fox 8, he tried "to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in" and then got shot three times. She also revealed after he got shot, he said to the gunman,"It's my son's birthday today." 

But, the gunman shot Mintz again.

Mintz posted a birthday message to his son:

CNN reported, Mintz revealed to his cousin he had been shot five times. According to reports, he was shot in the legs, stomach, back and hands.

On Friday, Mintz had a friend post an update on his condition.

While Mintz is recovering at a hospital, a GoFundMe  account has been set up for him to cover his medical expenses.
