A vehicle license plate was sold for nearly $2.3 million on Sunday in Hong Kong during an auction. The amount is the highest ever paid in the city during the license plate auctions.

The particular plate which has the number '28' is special because it sounds like the Cantonese phrase for "easy money." Although the new owner of the particular license plate was not revealed but the bidder for the plate said that he was representing another party.

That bidder also won the bidding for another licence plate carrying the number '232' for around $174,000, Oriental Daily News reported.

The tradition putting the coveted license plates up for auction was started in the year 1973. The money acquired through the action goes into charity.
