A 100-year-old grandmother in the UK has unveiled the secret of a long life – a pint of Guinness beer for breakfast everyday.

Gladys Fielden has been gulping the black stuff every day for 70 years and feels all the better for it. "I have a Guinness at 10.30 every morning with a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and it's what has kept me going all these years," she said.

The pint is topped off with lemonade and helped her work as a baker until the age of 90. Gladys celebrated her 100th birthday last Saturday where she got a card from the Queen. "I've been overwhelmed by it all. So many people have come to see me, it's been wonderful," she said.

"Gladys is very stubborn in her ways and so she's got to have her Guinness. She's also got a sweet tooth. During her party we had to tell her to stop eating so much cake because we thought she might be sick," her granddaughter Michelle Clews, 57, said. "She's got a very positive outlook on life and so I think that's helped her through all these years. She's a remarkable woman and very good for her age. I think we all hope we can be like Gladys if we get to her age," Clews added.

Gladys started drinking Guinness 70 years ago when she was pregnant, after being told it had health benefits. She puts her long life down to the drink's nutrients. "If anyone in the family is ever ill, she tells them to get a Guinness down them," Clews said.
