UK rejects Chetri’s work permit

Sunil Chetri’s dream of playing in England hit a severe roadblock after his work permit plea was rejected by the UK government on Friday. Chetri had signed a three-year contract with English championship side Queens Park Rangers (QPR), partly owned by the Mittal group, a few weeks ago.

But the deal was kept under the covers as Chetri first wanted to wait for all the formalities to get over. “I am disappointed because the work permit is something that I can’t do anything about, being so close and not getting it is indeed disappointing. But it’s not the end of the world. I will still continue working hard for my country and my club Dempo, who have been very supportive,” Chetri said.

Since India is not in the top 70 in the FIFA ranking and the British government only permits non EU players if the player is playing for a country that is ranked below 70 in FIFA ranking.

Chetri’s London-based agent Yogesh Joshee told DNA they will have to wait till the next transfer period in January to carry things forward. “Even if we appeal the decision right now, it won’t be heard before the window closes on Tuesday. It’s a big blow but we have to be positive,” Joshee said.
