ShareMumbai: Swimming in the Baga beach, cycling around the sea shore and then running along the picturesque Portuguese architecture in the North of Goa will constitute India's first triathlon. Goa 2010, India International Triathlon will hit the land of feasts, fair and celebration on February 14.
Explaining other details to DNA, race director Roman Floesser, a triathlete and race management expert, said that there could not have been a better destination than Goa for the event to be held first time. "It is India's Hawaii, don't you agree with me?" asked Roman after completing the recee of the course.
There will be nine different categories so that participants even at an age of 8 can make the most of it. "We want to involve as many people as possible to participate in the inaugural event," said Chandradev Bhagat, CEO, Grey Matter entertainment, the organising team.
Triathlon is an ultimate test of an individual's fitness and endurance. The India International Triathlon will be a combination of 1.5kms of swimming, 60kms of biking and 11kms of running. The distance is longer than the usual Olympic triathlon which has 1.5kms of swimming, 40kms of biking and 10kms of running.
Participants will have to swim through the sea of Candolim beach, bike through the roads via the Siolim and Calangute Church and run midst the Arambol hills and Charpora river. Other categories will include kids duathlon which will have no sea swimming but only varying bike and running distance according to their age groups. There will be a duathlon which will have 5kms of swimming, 20kms biking and 5kms running. A separate category will also be there for the corporates, team relays and sprint triathlon.
Race director Roman says that Triathlon is a novel concept for theIndians so having smaller distances for starters will attract more people. "Ultimate race can only be completed by the athletes who have trained for over a year, most of the guys here will be new to this race so giving them options with various categories will only motivate them to challenge themselves for the coming year," explained Roman who has organised similar events in Malaysia, Phuket, Singapore and also the first Iron Man series race in China.
