St Anthony’s School, Chembur, defeated Divine Child 25-5 in the quarterfinals of the girls’ mini (Under-13) category of the Bombay YMCA Annual Open state level basketball tournament at the Ghatkopar YMCA, on Wednesday.

It took nearly five minutes for the deadlock to be broken, which was achieved by Divine Child’s Shreya Salian through a free throw. The scoreline looked fitter for a football match rather than a basketball match at the end of the first quarter, as St Anthony’s trailed by a slender 1-0 margin.

The floodgates opened for St Anthony’s in the second quarter as they scored five times, without reply, to go into the half time break leading 10-1. Divine child relied heavily on Salian, who was benched in the second quarter, as a player is only allowed to play at most three quarters in the Mini category.

She scored immediately after the resumption of play after half time, raising hopes of a comeback, but by then St Anthony’s players had identified her as the main threat and double teamed her for the rest of the game.

Rutuja Kulkarni and Prerna Baliga were the top scorers for St Anthony’s with eight and six points respectively. The duo combined well to break their opponents’ man-to-man defence several times. St Anthony’s increased their lead to 15 points in the third quarter, which ended with the score line of 18-3.

Despite taking a seemingly unassailable lead, the Chembur side did not relax and pressed on to score seven more points in the last quarter. The only bright moment for Divine Child was a basket by Aakanksha Shetty from outside the ‘D’, but it fetched the team only two points as there are no 3-pointers in Mini basketball.
