Senhora D’Souza gets the better of Runa Roy Mumbai table tennis championships

Fifth seed Senhora D’Souza upset favourite Runa Roy to storm into the women’s semifinals of the Matunga Gymkhana Bajaj 4-Star Mumbai District Ranking table tennis championships held at the Matunga Gymkhana on Saturday.

Senhora kicked off a dramatic day of upsets when she overcame fourth seed Roy in straight games 11-8 11-5 11-8 11-6 in the best-of-seven quarterfinals. In the other upset of the day, sixth seed Mrunmayee Mhatre beat No 3 Sanjukta Sen 4-3 in the quarterfinals. Mhatre recovered from a 1-2 deficit to surge to a thrilling 11-9 4-11 4-11 11-4 13-11 6-11 11-7 win to join Senhora in the semifinals.

In contrast, women’s top seed Shweta Parte eased into the last four following a 4-0 rout of eight seed Tanmya D’Souza.
