In what was an expected result, Services inflicted a heavy defeat on Maharashtra in the Savio Cup all-India basketball tournament at the Don Bosco, Matunga, on Tuesday.

Services, the combined team of all the armed forces, are one of the favourites in the competition and were expected to overcome the home team easily, which they did with the score of 81-38. Maharashtra, suffering their third defeat on the trot, had no chance of qualifying for the final.

So confident were the Services in the game that they left their star ball-handler Sambhaji Kadam on the bench in the first quarter. Maharashtra attempted to press hard from the start by deploying a man-to-man defense system but they were easily overcome by the Services players.

The state’s women’s team showed more fight than their male counterparts in their game against Southern Indian Railways. The game ended with the score line at 78-64.

The key performer for the railways women was the Indian skipper Geetu Anna Jose who top scored with 21 points. Shieen Limaye of Maharashtra, who had produced a match-winning performance against Karnataka in their first game, had another good game as she scored 13, while their top-scorer was Sneha Rajguru with 16 points to her name.

In another men’s match on Tuesday, Shooting for success, the visitors from US showed they were genuine title contenders by defeating Indian Oversees Bank 94-60. The game was dominated by Wilson Limor and Terry Fields from SFS who scored 26 and 23 points respectively.
