Viswanathan Anand was warned that he should be prepared for trouble when he agreed to play Veselin Topalov in Sofia.

Some even suggested that Anand was walking into a lion’s den. The Team Topalov is known to be aggressive and psyche out their opponents.

The trouble for Anand may have just begun. His appeals for deferring the world championship by three days has not found favour with the world chess federation and the Bulgarian Chess Federation, the organisers of the championship.

Anand, who was stuck in Frankfurt, reached Sofia after a 40-hour road journey but his plea for a postponement of match dates has not found favour with the organisers fully.

Anand wanted the first game, scheduled to begin on Friday, be deferred by three days. When contacted Aruna, Anand’s wife and manager, said they are waiting for an official announcement to that effect.

“It should be announced soon,” Aruna told DNA from Sofia on Tuesday night. This paper has learnt that the organisers have agreed to delay the start of the match by only a day. The opening ceremony, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, however, will happen as planned. Anand might miss the press conference but will attend the opening ceremony, said Aruna. “The news from us is that we reached here safely,” she added.

Anand had planned to reach the venue on April 16, which is one week before the first game on April 23. Now, he arrived four days behind due to factors beyond his control. The route selected to reach Sofia was done after a look into
the visas they had on their passport.
