ShareMumbai: Aniket Sawant made it to the annals of Harris Shield but he won't be proud of his dubious record. Sawant was the captain of Indian Education Society Secondary School, Kandivali, against whom Rizvi Springfield's Sarfaraz Khan smacked 439 runs to create a world record on Wednesday.
"We are very disappointed. I never expected in my dreams that he would go so far. We had dropped a few catches but we cannot take away the credit from Sarfaraz as he batted brilliantly," Sawant said a day after Sarfaraz's feat. The 12-year-old's innings of 439, coming in at No.4, came in 421 balls and was studded with 12 sixes and 56 boundaries. The youngster was also involved in a 299-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Aditya Dhumal (86).
Adding to the disappointment, IES on Thursday were handed an innings defeat by Springfield on the last and third day of the first round match. IES coach Jai Mangal Vengurlekar was absent on the first day of the match as he was not in Mumbai.
"I was not in Mumbai when Sarfaraz was playing. My boys kept me updated on the scores. When I came to know that Sarfaraz is playing I gave a few instructions. I have seen him grow in front of my eyes. Our boys bowled well but they dropped a few catches. It was sheer bad luck for us," said Vengurlekar.
One of the instances was when Sarfaraz edged a ball to Siddhesh Patil, the wicket-keeper started celebrating even before bagging the catch properly. Umpire ruled in batsman's favour. "That was unfortunate," said Vengurlekar.
