National Men's Hockey: Chandigarh, Mumbai enter semifinals

Chandigarh and Mumbai entered the semifinals of the 63rd Rangaswami Cup Senior National Men's Hockey Championship being played at the Aishbagh Stadium here.

Chandigarh defeated hosts Madhya Pradesh State Hockey Academy (MPSHA), Bhopal 7-5 in a nail biting finish through penalty shootout while Mumbai defeated Punjab 4-2 last night.

For Chandigarh, Harmanpreet scored the first goal in the eighth minute to give a 1-0 lead to his team but Upendra Pillai of MPSHA equalised it through a brilliant field goal 15 minutes later.

After five minutes, Gurjant Singh of Chandigarh gave a 2-1 lead to his team through a field goal that became controversial.

The MPSHA players objected to this goal following which tension like situation arose between the two teams.

Seeing this, Technical Committee for the tournament announced that the goal was a clear one.

But soon, MPSHA equalised the score 2-2 and game ended a draw in the stipulated time.

Later, 15 minutes additional time was given for a golden goal but both teams failed to score any goal in sudden death leading to extension of the match to penalty shootout.

Chandigarh players converted all the five penalty shootouts into goals while MPSHA captain Shailendra Bundela missed his team's third attempt thus leading to its exit from the tournament.

In another quarter-final, Amit of Mumbai scored a brilliant field goal in the 21st minute to give a 1-0 lead to his team but Punjab equalised it in the 45th minute by converting a penalty corner through Karanjeet Singh.

Later, Mumbai struck two goals in a span of three minutes by Gursev Singh (49th minute) through penalty stroke and Laxman Rao (52nd minute) through a penalty corner and gave 3-0 lead to their team.

In the 63rd minute, Mumbai consolidated its lead to 4-0 by putting the ball in the net through Jayesh Jadhav.

However, Karanjeet of Punjab hit his second goal through penalty stroke in the 66th minute and reduced the margin 4-2.

Till breather, Mumbai led 1-0.

In another fixture, SAIL stamped out Orissa 5-3 and booked a berth for it for the quarter-finals.

For SAIL, Adnan Wasim (27th and 32 minutes) and John Topno (48th and 55th minutes) scored two goals each while Aijub Ekka scored a goal in the 26th minute while Pradeep Lakra (10th minute), Chonas Dung Dung (30th minute) and Samresh Jojo (61st minute) struck one goal each for Orissa.

At the end of first half, SAIL led 3-2.
