Two days after Virender Sehwag threatened to quit the Delhi Ranji team alleging nepotism, chief selector Chetan Chauhan conceded that there were issues that needed to be resolved.

Sehwag had lashed out against the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) administration on Sunday alleging that the sports committee, which nominates the selection panel, was harming the game by influencing selection of players at different levels. According to Sehwag, selectors often ganged up to push in players of their choice, ignoring his advice as well as that of former India opener Chauhan.

Chauhan said problems needed to be sorted out at the earliest and that Delhi had to hold on to Sehwag at any cost. “Much of what Sehwag has said is true. We’ll try to make the selection process transparent. I get calls all the time from politicians and bureaucrats who try to push in players in the team. I’m sure we can work out a solution. We certainly can’t let go of him,” Chauhan said.

Former India all-rounder and national selector Madan Lal too backed Sehwag. “Many players have left the DDCA before and the problem could be in the selection process,” said Madan Lal. Other present senior players too have been left frustrated by the functioning of the DDCA officials.

India players Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma are reported to be considering playing from other teams if Sehwag decides to leave. Gambhir and Ishant have suggested that the sports committee be dissolved, while Nehra feels it is the last time for the state cricket body to correct itself.

Senior officials are confident the matter will be resolved once Sehwag, who is undergoing rehabilitation for a shoulder injury in Bangalore, returns to the capital and has a talk with DDCA President Arun Jaitley. Sports secretary Sunil Dev avers the selection process is clean while others in the DDCA feel Sehwag is only trying to increase his influence by threatening to stop playing for Delhi.

“Sehwag is probably miffed at the fact that his cousin is not making it big,” said a DDCA official, referring to Mayank Tehlan, who has remained a fringe player despite showing early promise.
