Indian tennis star Leander Paes, who generally keeps himself away from any confrontational on-court behaviour, was involved in a mother of all verbal volleys with former American tennis legend John McEnroe.

The incident took place in Washington DC, when Paes 's Washington Kastles team faced off against McEnroe’s New York Sportimes, as part of World Team Tennis.

During the match, it is believed that McEnroe, who has a history of verbal volleys, became enraged after his doubles partner Robert Kendrick, was pegged with a volley by the Indian star, New York Post reports.

It is reported that after Kendrick retaliated by serving the ball at Paes, the two sides erupted into a shouting match.

“It was like a hockey game. The coaches were yelling at each other, the players were all shouting,” a source said.

The Washington Kastles, who eventually lost the match in a tiebreaker, were said to have protested against the matter.
