Motorsports is growing fast and has been gaining popularity in India. This is evident with India set to host its first-ever Grand Prix in October this year and Narain Kartikeyan making his comeback to F1.

Amidst all this, there is yet another racer who is trying his luck with the GP2 series.

21-year-old Armaan Ebrahim, who has already made a mark at the A1 grand prix and Formula Two, will soon be testing with two GP2 teams, Scuderia Coloni and Rapax in February at Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

The son of a former Formula 3 racer, Akbar Ebrahim, Armaan was exposed to racing at a very early age and was rated as the ‘Driver with the Best Race Form’ by the Formula Two website.

When asked about his upcoming GP2 tests, Armaan said, “The seats are ready for me, I just need to work on my sponsorship and funds. Once that is done, then I will definitely be racing in GP2 series this year. F2 gave me a chance to prove my mettle. I have turned out to be a better driver after that. GP2 will be like a stepping stone to F1 as they run parallel and we will be able to get a lot of recognition. If things go fine this time, then in two or three years I should be able to race in the F1 circuit.”

On the eve of the Amaron Karting Challenge at the Hakone karting track in Powai, Armaan said that such championships are a good platform for youngsters to prove their racing skills. “Racing has grown rapidly in India. Such competitions help kids from less privileged backgrounds to compete at the top level. The winner gets the opportunity to represent India at the world championship. The initiatives taken by Amaron, JK Tyres, Volkswagen, have strengthened racing at the grassroots,” he said.

On Narain’s comeback to F1, Armaan said, “It is great news that Narain is back in F1. Now that Chandhok (Karun) is not racing this year, Narain’s presence will keep the Indian buzz going, especially at the Indian GP. I wish him all the best.”
