Aditya Udeshi is on a roll. At the Mayor’s Cup international open chess tournament here on Saturday, the Mumbai lad upset Grandmaster GM Vokarev Sergey (Elo 2501). The fifth round win has raised his hopes of winning the third and final International Master norm.

Playing with blacks, Aditya opted for Najdorf variation of the Sicilian defense. Instead of attacking Kingside, Sergey went for exchange the Queens on Move 12, as he was willing to take on Aditya in the ending.

But in the endgame, Aditya played some brilliant Rook and Knight moves attacking the opponent’s King. To stop the attack, Sergy had to sacrifice an exchange. After that, Aditya played a good technical endgame and completed the formalities in 59 moves. So far, he has scored 2.5 against three GMs. Aditya is a student of NM College.

Meanwhile, second seed GM Parimarjan Negi suffered a defeat at the hands of inform and current Commonwealth champion GM RR Laxman (ElO 2476).

Playing white pieces, Laxman opted for Catalan opening, taking inspiration from World championship game between Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov.

He attacked Negi’s kingside. To avoid it, Negi sacrificed his Queen in return of Rook and Knight. Due to an exposed king, Negi could not avoid loss of material and resigned after 47 moves.
