Manchester United failed to bridge the gap between Premier League leaders Chelsea and Manchester City as they were held to a frustrating draw by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

United dominated the field in the first half, creating several good chances, with Juan Mata's deflected free-kick hitting the post, but failed to put the ball past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Lloris also denied Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Ashley Young as Tottenham offered little. Tottenham's Andros Townsend saw two shots easily saved, but the hosts rallied late on with Ryan Mason firing over, the BBC reported.

Tottenham has scored late winners against Swansea and Leicester recently but despite enjoying almost 65 percent of possession in the final 15 minutes, they could not create any last-gasp drama against third-placed United.

United boss Louis van Gaal has been critical of the Premier League's busy Christmas schedule, but decided to name an unchanged XI from the 3-1 home win against Newcastle less than two days ago.

It was the first time in 85 Premier League games, since November 2012, that United named an unchanged line-up. After enjoying dominance in the first half, United appeared to tire after the break, failing to have a shot on target, as Tottenham improved.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said that he believes it's a 'fair result', adding that his side's performance was 'good' as it was a 'great effort' from the players.

Pochettino claimed that it was a 'difficult' first half against a United team with great players, but his side believed and showed that they were 'solid', adding that they are 'improving with every game'.
