Here's why you may never get to hear Sunil Gavaskar on commentary again

Apart from the fact that Gavaskar is 'very expensive', he does not share a great relationship with BCCI President Shashank Manohar.

Sunil Gavaskar has been one of the premier Indian commentators on the scene in international cricket. However, media reports now suggest that Gavaskar's relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has soured and the former great may no longer be in the commentary box after May.

Gavaskar has been a long-standing associate of the board's internally-held production house that hires its own commentators on a full-time basis. Gavaskar's contract comes up for renewal in April-May but the board seems not too keen on renewing it.

The reason being cited is that Gavaskar's salary as commentator is astronomical. While other commentators are paid anywhere between Rs 35,000 to Rs 1 lakh per day for their services, Gavaskar was reportedly paid eight times that amount for a day's commentary.

For example, Sanjay Manjrekar was paid Rs 36.49 lakh for the entire India-SA series while Anil Kumble was paid Rs 39.1 lakh for the same. However, Gavaskar was reportedly paid almost Rs 90 lakh for the same. "Sunny gets Rs 10 lakh per match day while Sanjay gets around Rs 3 to 4 lakh," said a source to an English news daily.

It is being reported that Manjrekar and some other prominent commentators are likely to be promoted while Gavaskar will be ditched.

However, there is another interesting reason for Gavaskar's impending departure. Apparently he has not 'toed the line' of the BCCI during commentary. It is not clear how his commentary can be termed anything other than the official line though. Both Gavaskar and his colleague Ravi Shastri seem to have parroted the Board's views for a long time. Whether it was debates on the Decision Review System (DRS)or the square-turning tracks against South Africa at home, the two have always stood behind the Board.

Similarly, the fate of Ravi Shastri after the end of his tenure as Team India director is not clear. Gavaskar is known to be on poor terms with BCCI chief Shashank Manohar, which may also hasten his departure.
