Ever since Yogeshwar Dutt returned empty handed from Rio de Janeiro, he was largely confined to his own boundaries. The first round defeat in the 65kg category at the Olympics came as the biggest shock of the Games and Dutt found it hard to explain his loss.

But a pleasant news out of the blue on Monday night gave him some reasons to smile. And, India's most experienced grappler was forced to come back on social media. He confirmed that news of his London Games bronze medal being upgraded to silver after the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) caught late Russian wrestler Besik Kudukhov in doping reanalysis. Kudukhov, after beating Dutt in the first round, went on to finish as a silver medallist in the 60kg freestyle wrestling in 2012 London Games.

This has come as a result of WADA's "legacy testing" or "retrospective testing" procedure where samples of athletes are kept in deep freeze and tested time and again with the upgradation of testing techniques to ensure that "the clean athletes get justice even if it comes a bit late".

Thus, Dutt joined Anju Bobby George as the second Indian who has been benefited with this system.

However, the official confirmation has not reached Wrestling Federation of India office till late on Tuesday. But it was Russian agency on Monday (flowrestling.org) that confirmed that "the four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medallist Kudukhov, who died in a car crash in 2013 in southern Russia, has been stripped of the silver medal".

The site also stated that Kudukhov samples collected at London were retested in keeping with new policy just before the Rio Games.

As per WADA's revised norms, samples taken for dope tests are now been stored up to 10 years in order to allow the use of advanced technology, available with passing time, to catch the dope cheats. That was the reason when long jumper Anju's silver medal at the 2005 World Athletics final in Monte Carlo was replaced with gold in 2014 after Russian Tatyana Kotova was tested positive in retests.

Anju was also awarded bronze for this very reason for 2013 Helsinki World Championships as silver medallist Kotova was stripped of her medal.

It would only be after the official confirmation from the United World Wrestling (UWW) that a date, when Yogeshwar would be handed silver medal, will be confirmed.

We haven't got the official confirmation from either the UWW or the IOC, but we have got to know that his bronze medal will be upgraded to silver," Vinod Tomar, WFI's assistant secretary said, adding: "The official confirmation will come soon, but one thing is for sure, Yogeshwar will now get the silver after the Russian wrestler failed the dope test."
