English footballer Adam Johnson, who made 12 appearances for the country between 2010 and 2012, has been sentenced to six years' imprisonment for 'grooming and sexual activity' with a 15-year-old girl.

According to international media, Johnson was found guilty on a charge of sexual touching, but cleared of another charge related to sexual activity.

The former Sunderland winger previously admitted grooming the girl and one charge of sexual activity.

Johnson has also be asked to cough up GBP 50,000 and has a restraining order preventing him from contacting the survivor or her family.

Judge Jonathan Rose said the girl had "suffered severe psychological harm" and been subjected to "threats and thousands of abusive remarks" on social media.

"(This is) an abuse of trust - you are trusted by young fans to behave properly. She had only just turned 15 when you began grooming her, because, as you were to admit, you found her sexually attractive," said the judge. He was of the opinion that Johnson had intended to engage in sexual activity with the girl despite knowing she was under the age of consent of 16.

Meanwhile, Dr Philip Hopley, a consultant psychiatrist giving evidence for the defence, told the court that Johnson was 'socially and psychologically immature at the age of 28'. He also claimed that there was no evidence that Johnson had 'an attraction to pre-pubescent children or sexual perversion'.

Johnson's sister Faye Johnson put up this appeal on Facebook hours before the sentencing:

Today is the sentencing for my brother, the worst day of my life I just wanted to let all of the supporters know that...
