For starters, one must remember that there are three Chor Bazaars — at Dadar TT, Dedh Galli in Grant Road which sells only shoes and the main one at Mutton Street.

The Chor Bazaar at Mutton Street is the real thing where you get absolutely everything. I have heard that you even get bikes though I haven't seen any. Although things are cheaper, the sellers have realised that they are in great demand and you have to have good bargaining skills to get a good deal.

Tips for first-timers:

  • Avoid buying stuff on your first visit. Go there at least 2-3 times and get to know the market inside out. Sellers usually don't entertain freshers and quote unreasonable prices.
  • When bargaining, start with 40 per cent of the amount quoted and never pay more than 60 per cent. For example, if the price quoted is Rs1,000, start with Rs400 and avoid paying more than Rs600.
  • You'd much rather buy from the regular market if you are paying that much money.
  • Don't show too much enthusiasm in any particular item, no matter how much you like it. Finding fault with the item will help you negotiate the price.
  • Don't haggle for long. Be prepared to end a deal if it isn't happening.
  • Avoid bargaining in presence of other customers. Sellers will be reluctant to bring down prices in the presence of many customers and you will not get a good deal.
