We have seen numerous mobile makers coming up with phones having foldable displays, notably the LG G Flex, G Flex 2 Samsung Galaxy X and Lenovo teasing with their versions of the concept. There is no arguing that flexible displays are one of the next big things in smartphone innovation.

The latest in the fray happens to be Xiaomi, with a prototype of their flexible display based phone being captured on Chinese website Baidu.  The images of the phone are indeed evocative, with the device being shown to twist back to the front and being folded in the palm. More details of this phone have been reported by news source Gizmochina, but there was expectedly no concrete information on actual electronic or physical specifications.

The working project looks too good to be believed. The device is likely to have a plastic OLED screen, as it is currently the sole technology being used to fabricate a pliable display. Of course this new technology is bound to come at a price as the technology is still in its infancy. Also lifespan of the display and its component pixels remains a concern giving significantly greater physical stress they will have to endure compared to traditional display technologies.

The phone may possibly be unveiled sometime in 2017, although there are numerous factors at play which will influence its final release. The rumour mill does state that the upcoming flagship Mi Note 2--perhaps the most expensive phone Xiaomi will have built--may come with a surprise. The question is--what if the flexible display makes its way into this phone? It would be intriguing, given that a Note phone is typified by being monolithic and sturdy, while a flexible phone would have to be thin and sleek. Also if the new display is used in the phone, even the internal electronics, the motherboard, battery as well as the frame would need to be equally flexible for the functionality of the device to come together. Either way, it should be an interesting device to behold, especially when used in applications that would benefit from its inherent flexibility.
