Security firm Trend Micro recently released an urgent update urging users to uninstall QuickTime for Windows immediately.

The reason for this is Apple ceasing support for QuickTime for Microsoft’s operating systems, due to which the company will not be issuing updates to plug any potential security vulnerabilities in future.

Note that this advisory applies only to QuickTime installations on Windows--Apple continues to support QuickTime on Mac OS X.

This should not affect too many programs--even iTunes 7 on Windows no longer uses QuickTime codecs to play modern media formats. Using a freeware such as VLC Media Player or Kodi should more than suffice to play any audio or video file on your computer.

To uninstall QuickTime on Windows, open the Control Panel, start the ‘Uninstall a program’ tool and search for QuickTime 7. Then right-click the program entry and click Uninstall.
