Tesla Elon Musk recently opened up one of his latest projects to the media, a Gigafactory out in the Nevada desert. With a 3,200 acre footprint, and costing US $5 billion to set up, the plant will be manufacturing battery cells for Tesla’s vehicles, and hopefully cutting production costs by 30  percent. And now, Musk might be setting up another Gigafactory in India.

Ten months ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited a Tesla manufacturing plant in California. This time around, Minister of Road Transport, Highways & Shipping, Nitin Gadkari, paid a visit to the facility on July 15. There, he offered to promote joint ventures between Tesla and Indian manufacturers, as the government focuses on pollution-free road transport in the country.

According to Autocar India, Tesla’ senior executives are already aware that new manufacturing hubs are needed in order to reach  a wider global market. The report says they “appreciated the Indian offer of cooperation, which will be considered at an appropriate time in the future”. Tesla has confirmed that the next-generation low-cost Model 3 will definitely be coming to India.
