Coravin, the maker of the wine-opening system that allows users to pour a glass of wine without popping the cork, has launched a new, more affordable model aimed specifically at millennials.

Like the original system, the Coravin Model One allows wine drinkers to pour a single glass without committing to drinking the whole bottle.

But instead of pricier chrome, gold and silver finishes, the Model One is made with more inexpensive materials to keep prices low for their target demographic: millennials.

Designed to be user-friendly, the Model One is meant to appeal to “both new and experienced wine lovers,” reads a press release for the launch.

Citing statistics from the Wine Market Council released in 2015, Coravin is hoping to make loyal users out of a growing base of wine drinkers: The survey shows that millennial wine drinkers are beginning to outpace baby boomers (36 versus 34 percent) in the US.

Here's how it works: first, a thin hollow needle pierces the cork to extract the wine. Then the bottle is pressurised with argon, pushing the wine through the needle so that it flows into the glass.

Once the needle is removed, the cork is said to naturally reseal itself.

The system also promises to prevent oxidation -- enemy No. 1 for wine.

The Coravin is one of many wine gadgets for oenophile techno-geeks.

The Sonic Decanter created a buzz when it launched in 2014, for claiming to age cheap, young wine in as little as 20 minutes using the power of ultrasonic energy.

Likewise, France's 10-Vins was named the best start-up at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year for their D-Vine machine, described as a Nespresso machine for wine. Like the single-serve coffee machines, the device opens, aerates and cools wine from single-serve flasks, eliminating the need to open a full bottle.

And the Kuvée is billed as the world's first smart bottle, promising to keep wines fresh for up to a month through a patented valve system that prevents oxygen from reaching the wine.

The Coravin Model One retails for $200 (Approx Rs 13,300), versus $300 (Approx Rs 20,000) for the original model.
