If Indian students Down Under were feeling victimised and unattended to, help came from a top political leader of Gujarat. Leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil visited Melbourne, Sydney and Blue Mountain in wake of the attacks on Indian students, a good number hailing from Gujarat.

Gohil actively talked to NGOs and other organisations working with the Indian community there, to understand their real issues, as well as participated in peace rallies. He got a first-hand feel of issues of the aggrieved students and how they need to be addressed. The students' issues were promptly forwarded by Gohil to the Indian external affairs ministry, through prompt communication with Ahmed Patel, SM Krishna and Shashi Tharoor. Gohil proactively interacted with Australian police authorities, pointing out the specific issues faced by the Indian community and sought to address their concerns.

"There are some areas where Indians have to pass through the underbelly of the city — the druggist areas — dominated by Lebanese and anti-social elements. More protection has been sought specifically for these areas from the local police, and they have assured us the safety of Indians. A round table conference was also held with representatives of Indian associations to discuss solutions," Gohil said on Thursday, after his return from the six-day visit to Australia on Wednesday.

Australian authorities have formed a special task force, headed by their national security advisor to "deliver justice to victims and suggest future plan of action for security provisions". Australia has 90,000 Indian students and 4,000 Gujarati students. "The BJP-led Gujarat govt has not made any  efforts to reach out to the community there, and represent them to the authorities there. They have only made statements voicing concerns," he added.
