A 30-year-old woman was arrested here for allegedly murdering her "alcoholic and abusive" husband after her father reported the matter to police, investigators said on Sunday.

Neha alias Sunita was arrested on Saturday from her Rohini residence by police after her father reported the murder of his son-in-law Naveen (32) on Friday night, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Atul Katiyar said.

The accused first hit Naveen with a wooden piece and when he became unconscious, she stabbed him in the throat with a kitchen knife, he said and added that as it got twisted and then took another knife to stab him.

"She changed her clothes and washed her hands and went to her parental house. She made plans the whole night to cook up a story but could not gather courage. Finally in the morning, she narrated the incident to her father Chandoo Lal who reported the matter to the police," Katiyar said.

The provocation was that Naveen forced her to drink alcohol and then beat her up, the police official said.

The woman, a graduate, was working in a beauty parlour at Pitampura when she met Naveen, also working there. Her family's financial condition was not good and she could not get a suitable match for herself.

She became friendly with Naveen, hailing from Haryana's Panipat, and after some time the families got them married, Katiyar said.

Though Neha shifted to Panipat after marriage, the couple had to come back to Delhi after the birth of their daughter for work, Katiya said and added that Naveen was an "alcoholic" and did not work.

"Naveen became a habitual drunkard and used to beat her to bring money. He also used to beat her every now and then on trivial family issues. Neha even tried to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills two years back but she survived," Katiyar said.

"Neha was also very worried as her daughter was growing up seeing these things. She even tried to live separately but could not succeed," Katiyar said.

Lal had told police that on June five, he came to his home at about 10.30 pm and found his daughter Neha and her six-year-old child there.

On asking, Neha told that she had a fight with her husband.

"Lal told her not to worry and assured her that he will talk to her husband in the morning as it was routine for her husband to pick up a fight every now and then," Katiyar said.

The next day morning, he said, Lal noticed that Sunita was very upset and when he enquired, she broke down and told him that she had killed her husband last night.

Katiyar said the knife allegedly used to commit the crime was also recovered along with blood stained clothes.
