Reiterating that giving dowry is as a serious crime as demanding it, a Noida court asked the Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday to file a criminal complaint against a woman and her parents for giving dowry to her husband at the time of their marriage four years ago.

The Noida chief judicial magistrate ordered the filing of an FIR against call centre employee Natasha Juyal and her parents under section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Natasha dragged husband Namit to court accusing him of demanding and taking dowry.

The order came during the hearing of Namit’s counter-complaint that police didn’t take cognizance of the fact that dowry giving was also an offence. Software engineer Namit’s lawyer Pradeep Nawani argued that Natasha had not only accepted giving dowry but also submitted a list of stridhan. He said her claim of huge expenses at the time of marriage did not match her father’s financial capacity.
