The 16-year-old, said to be an NRI, was caught by commuters, but two other girls managed to escape.
In a hit-and-run incident that brought the busy Shivranjani Crossroads in the city to a halt for some time, an underage girl driving a Lancer hit as many as three cars before trying to escape from the scene, on Monday.
The girl was allegedly in an inebriated condition when the incident happened and was accompanied by two other female friends. The sixteen-year-old was caught by the commuters while two other girls managed to escape from the spot.
However, no police complaint was filed till late evening. “She was not able to control the car and she hit my Maruti-800 from behind,” Kartik Patel, whose car the teenager first hit told DNA.
The accused, who was at that time allegedly drunk, immediately put her car in reverse to escape from the spot. “However, her car hit a Qualis that was just behind. The impact pushed back the Qualis which in turn hit an Indica, which was behind the Qualis,” Patel said. Commuters said two girls immediately came out of the car after the accident and ran away while the girl who was driving could not escape.
“She couldn’t run because she did not seem to be in her senses. She could not even stand properly,” a commuter who witnessed the incident told DNA. The girl, soon became unconscious and was rushed to a nearby private hospital.
“She started vomiting as soon as she entered hospital and could not stand,” a witness said. The girl was later taken to the Satellite police station and the police it seemed was eager on protecting the girl.
They prevented the media from seeing the accused and soon took her somewhere in a private vehicle. “We will register a complaint and will later on investigate the case,” said police sub inspector,
AS Parmar. Another eyewitness said two men came and tried to settle the issue with the police. “The men then took the girl in a private vehicle along with the police,” said the person. A source said the girl had returned from the US and belongs to an influential family.
